Eight early demo recordings by the feminist duo Heavens to Betsy, formed in 1991 by vocalist/guitarist Corin Tucker and drummer Tracy Sawyer, have received their first proper release nearly 35 years later. Recorded in Olympia, Washington, by Bratmobile member Molly Neuman, these tracks serve as a striking document of the Riot Grrrl movement alongside the work of Bikini Kill.
The songs confront taboo and painful topics, from body acceptance ("my red self") and unsafe abortions ("baby's gone") to betrayal and childhood trauma ("stay dead", "my secret"). The material also features tracks from the EPs These Monsters Are Real and Direction, showcasing the evolution of Tucker's vocal and guitar style. This raw energy and uncompromising lyricism laid the foundation for Tucker's future band, Sleater-Kinney (formed with Carrie Brownstein), and deeply influenced subsequent generations of alternative artists, including Olivia Rodrigo.
