British collective Gently Tender, formed by former Palma Violets members Sam Fryer, Pete Mayhew, and Will Doyle, alongside guitarist Adam Brown, vocalist Francesca Brierley (heka), and violinist Evie Hilyer-Ziegler of the folk outfit Broadside Hacks, has unveiled "This Was Once Fields", their first release since 2023.
The core inspiration for the composition stemmed from long, solitary walks taken by frontman Sam Fryer through the green belt of North London. Gazing at the city skyline from afar at night, he reflected on his lifelong, complex relationship with the metropolis that both weighs heavily on him and holds his eternal affection. This contemplative mood shapes the track's sonic identity, weaving pastoral melodies inspired by the British countryside into a stirring indie rock framework laced with elements of folk, punk, and soul, heightened by delicate violin and flute arrangements.
