American country-folk singer-songwriter Emily Scott Robinson has recorded her new album, Appalachia, the follow-up to her highly acclaimed 2021 release American Siren. It was made at Dreamland Recording Studios, housed in a 130-year-old church hidden in the woods outside Kingston, New York. Yet the heart of the album lies not in New York but in Appalachia, hundreds of miles to the southwest.

The bluegrass-tinged title track, “Appalachia,” is both an ode to this mountainous region of the eastern United States and an anthem of resilience, community, and hope, shaped by the devastation Hurricane Helene brought to western North Carolina in 2024. It showcases Robinson’s crystal-clear, slightly twangy voice and her songwriting craft — the very skill that earned her a place on Oh Boy Records, the label founded by John Prine in 1981.

Robinson’s greatest strength is telling stories about the human experience in a way that seems simple yet is vivid and evocative, like pencil sketches that come alive in the imagination. This runs throughout the album: in the quietly folky “Cast Iron Heart,” about heartbreak and redemptive love; in “Time Traveler,” a portrait of an elderly woman with cognitive decline built from precise details; in “Dirtbag Saloon,” a country waltz turned into sharp commentary on inequality, gentrification, and “progress” at any cost; and in “Bless It All,” a tale of struggle and perseverance built from a single acoustic guitar, a memorable melody, and images of unpaid bills, tested faith, and shoulders to cry on.

A special place belongs to “The Time for Flowers,” a 2020 single written in the darkest days of the Covid-19 pandemic. It was this song that caught the attention of Oh Boy Records. A meditation on life’s ups and downs, the interconnectedness of existence, and the importance of hope, it carries its core message in the refrain: the time for flowers will come again — in a year or in ten, even when despair sometimes wins. That idea is hard to hold onto right now, and songwriters like Robinson help us remember it.
