With its third album, do you love the color of the sky?, the Los Angeles band Dummy pushes an old trick to its limit: real dance rhythms buried under layers of atmosphere and drone. The principle recalls how My Bloody Valentine hid a live rhythm section under a wall of distortion on “Soon,” but here the burial is hazy rather than noisy, and the breakbeats deliberately echo the pulse of early-’90s Creation Records.
The most telling track, “Full Spectrum Dominance,” began as a half-joking attempt at nu-metal. Guitarist Joe Trainor says a tambourine was added in the studio, turning the song into a dance track wearing a metal riff as a disguise. Its lyrics about AI and the devaluation of creative labor bite harder than most of the record’s quieter moments. Opener “April Limousine” rides an equally propulsive beat and addresses climate collapse; keyboardist Emma Maatman’s unbothered vocal contrasts with the hard-working rhythm section beneath her.
The band’s previous album, Free Energy, was rhythmic too, but its beats and guitars hit directly, built for impact. Now the same ingredients serve mood: guitars drift and drone, like early Seefeel or prime-era Broadcast, while the grooves dissolve into the haze. Guest vocalists don’t disturb the calm tone: Nina Pitchkites on “Song of Mana,” Allyson Foster and Paul Benson on “Alluvial Fan.” The atmospheric approach never sidelines the band’s rhythmic and guitar instincts; the grooves and shoegaze pedals work to create flow and atmosphere rather than squall for its own sake.
