Scottish composers Andrew Wasylyk and Tommy Perman are releasing a collaborative soundtrack album, “House With A Curse”. It is their second joint work after “Ash Grey and the Gull Glides On”, which was nominated for the Scottish Album of the Year Award. Dundee Contemporary Arts’ Dundead Film Festival commissioned them to write a new score for Rupert Julian’s 1925 film “The Phantom of the Opera”. Lon Chaney played Erik the Phantom in it, and the film is considered a landmark of the horror genre and of silent cinema: opulent costumes, extravagant sets, hundreds of extras and early Technicolor.
The music was written, recorded and mixed in under three months. The duo deliberately engages with the film’s portrayal of disability and otherness and looks at the classic story through a contemporary lens. Wasylyk composed melodies at the piano in his Dundee studio while the tragedy at the Paris Opera House was projected onto the wall. Perman made experimental percussive recordings at home, using the materials visible on screen: stone, wood, fabric, glass and metal. These recordings became the rhythmic and sonic foundation of the album.
The arrangements combine choral voices, piano, synthesiser, drum machine, nylon acoustic guitar and Mellotron, all delivered in a distorted, haunting way built on contrasts: expansive yet claustrophobic, linear yet crooked, hypnotic and achingly beautiful. There is nothing of the traditional horror soundtrack here. In “Take Callers Have Departed”, heavily processed operatic voices and foreboding techno give way to plucked guitar and gliding Farfisa synthesiser. “Strangler’s Noose Coils Quick” leads into the subterranean chambers beneath Paris, where drum machine and piano accompany Raoul and Ledoux’s attempt to rescue Christine. “Empty Promise Open Palm” is built on a distorted synth bass and a motif that nudges the rhythm toward a dark, fatal cadence. The album is conceived as an exchange between past and present, and as an original alternative “veil” for a classic horror spectacle.
