“Harp in Aquarius” (1992) is the sixteenth album by the Breton harpist MYRDHIN, entirely original and released after the successful second collaborative project with Pol Huellou. The title and the cover, a tiny harp on a beach among gemstones, set up a theme of the sea and minerals: every composition was written by MYRDHIN himself and named after a stone: “Oeil de Tigre,” “Jaspe du Matin,” “Hématite Rivale,” “Cornaline Aquarienne.” Thanks to studio processing, the sound of the harp, especially the bardic harp, is clear and “watery.”
The music has a rare purity but is not limited to slow pieces: “Améthyste,” “Oeil de Tigre” and the second part of “Sodalites et Chimères” feature jigs and dances with an almost jazzy swing, enriched with small clusters and the flute of Pol Huellou. Zil adds keyboard pads and vocals (“Jaspe du Matin”), while David “Hopi” Hopkins makes his first significant contribution on percussion, in “Rêve d’Agate,” with an improvised passage for the wire-strung harp, and in the plinn dance “Danse du Quartz.”
The centrepiece is the sixteen-minute “Voix du Rutile,” featuring all three: odd meters, contemporary music and jazz elements, singing percussion and hints of didgeridoo. “Citrine du Rituel” recalls O’Carolan, “Aventurine” ends with a chanson, and “Hématite Rivale” condenses ideas from “Itinérances” on the album “Harpèges.” The finale is the most beautiful part, evening-like and hushed: “Sodalites et Chimères” ends with a jig echoing the opening of “Emersion,” “Cornaline Aquarienne” is filled with evanescent synthesizers, and “Cristal de Roche” interweaves harps as in “Fluences.” The sound captivates at once, while the compositions open up more slowly because of some lengthiness, but among his fully original works this is one of MYRDHIN’s best albums.
