Australian guitarist and experimentalist Oren Ambarchi and Canadian composer and sound artist crys cole (based in Berlin) performed together in Nanaimo, British Columbia. Ambarchi began in Sydney as a noise musician playing in Phlegm and Menstruation Sisters, then launched the Stacte series (from 1998), explored heavy rock, and founded the label Black Truffle, which releases his own work (notably the albums of his trio with Jim O’Rourke and Keiji Haino) as well as reissues of key pieces of 20th-century experimental music. Cole makes subtle sound works and sculptural installations, building sound from small gestures and amplified everyday objects; her approach is not the antic eccentricity of Fluxus but a slow accretion of sonic layers.
That night, Ambarchi played guitar at a table of electronics, while Cole sat at a table of objects ranging from electrical devices to kitchen-drawer odds and ends, with microphones amplifying their voices and gestures. The result is two pieces: flowing, immersive, almost underwater soundscapes in which the source of a sound can hardly be identified without watching the performers’ hands. At times the music has a deep, submarine heft; at others it evokes lying in a tent at night in a jungle full of cyborg insects. Taken together it feels like a dream state — beautiful, familiar and utterly strange.
The recording is the last LP in a series of concerts at the original White Room, the legendary gallery and performance space upstairs at 4 Church Street in Nanaimo, whose new landlord decided to use the premises differently. The organizers promise to find a new venue in the Nanaimo area and to continue the live recordings once the pandemic has passed.
Tracklist:
1-1 crys cole & Oren Ambarchi - Whether Report [21:55]
1-2 crys cole & Oren Ambarchi - Davide Campari / Pad Ped Kob [22:31]
