The Mustangs released their self-titled album in 1975 on G.B.I. Recording Co., based in Freeport. The album was produced by Frank Penn. The recording captures the group’s signature style, goombay, which combines traditional Bahamian rhythms with R&B and vocal harmonies. The band mainly performed to entertain guests by the pools at local hotels and, under Penn’s direction, recorded three albums between 1974 and 1978. The lineup included musicians John Brainen, Audley Garland, Kitch Penn, Clarence Gibson, Mike Russell, and Leo Saunders. The Mustangs gained international recognition through the song “Ya Mar,” which was the main source of inspiration for the band Phish. Although fans long attributed the song to the group, it was actually written by Cyril Ferguson. Other tracks, such as “The Time For Loving Is Now,” later appeared on the 2007 compilation album “Cult Cargo: Grand Bahama Goombay.”
