On February 15, 2016, a powerful blizzard struck Casey Research Station in East Antarctica and raged for more than thirty-six hours. The extreme weather event brought winds of over one hundred knots, creating conditions comparable to a hurricane. Philip Samartzis documents how the storm completely wiped out visibility and made any travel outside the station impossible, leaving the facility vulnerable to immense pressure, vibration, and noise. Although blizzards are common in Antarctica, this particular storm dramatically altered the landscape, erasing all surface traces once it had passed. Ultimately, the experience made it possible to create an acoustic recording of the tremendous kinetic force and air pressure generated by the storm.
