Edward Ka-Spel is a bottomless well of ideas. While The Legendary Pink Dots release new albums year after year, he still finds time to work with The Tear Garden and create his own material. Moreover, his solo albums are not simply a continuation of his band work under a different name. Ka-Spel once likened the workings of The Legendary Pink Dots to a democracy, whereas he described his solo career as an opportunity to become a dictator for a while—doing everything exactly according to his own vision.
However, anyone expecting something radically different from Ka-Spel’s solo work compared to The Legendary Pink Dots’ albums might be in for a surprise. The two musical worlds intersect at many points, and Ed’s distinctive creative signature is clearly recognizable here as well. Instead, we hear another side of the same world: music that, for one reason or another, did not make it into the collaborative projects.
The album draws from recordings made in the mid-1980s, and it quickly becomes apparent that Ka-Spel makes no particular effort to adhere to standard, predictable structures. Musical elements shift unexpectedly, ideas evolve in unpredictable directions, and certain passages feel almost like sound collages. Ka-Spel experiments freely, without trying to force these diverse concepts into a unified whole at all costs. Melodicism is by no means lost, and the connection to the music of The Legendary Pink Dots remains evident. Those familiar with the band's albums from the mid-1980s will encounter a different perspective on that same musical world here. They can also hear what happens when Edward Ka-Spel is completely free to decide the direction in which to take his music.
