Dutch sisters Sarah Nauta (28) and Julia Nauta (25), performing as the duo Sarah Julia, have released their debut album The Fear That This is Real, a record devoted entirely to impermanence and the acceptance of change. The Rotterdam-born duo, who had already changed their name (Sarah & Julia, Saar & Juul), their genre (from Eurovision-style pop to folk) and their city (from Rotterdam to Amsterdam) before their first release, recorded the album at Sugar Mountain Recording, a studio among the forests of upstate New York. The producer was Philip Weinrobe, known for his work with intimate folk artists and his collaboration with Adrianne Lenker. His method is strict: no headphones and no click tracks, all in pursuit of the raw, tactile imperfection of a live performance, with an album recorded in just days so there is no time for overthinking or polishing. Six days in the studio initially made the two self-confessed perfectionists nervous, but the trip itself was already a change, and the sisters chose to trust the process.
The sound keeps incidental live details: studio noise, a count-in before a song, wet audio at the end of a track, the creak of wood. On this foundation the album moves through different shades of folk: a Celtic seaside ballad, “Wishing Stone”; “Therapists Daughter”, with Joni Mitchell-style phrasing and Bob Dylan-style harmonica; “Bigger Picture”, in the manner of Laura Marling with a Nordic cello edge; and “Whatever It Takes”, with distorted guitar and the angst of Jagged Little Pill.
Lyrically, the sisters approach change through concrete images. “Bigger Picture” opens with the line “The strange thing about death is how life goes on” and describes the emptied house of a relative who has just died; the singers realize how little control they have over their lives, yet allow that this may be fine in the bigger picture. “Touchdown” sets modern mishaps, such as a wrongly set alarm and a “read” receipt, against an old folk sound, and tells of a shift from believing long relationships are boring to longing for stability. “Going Going Gone” and “Whatever It Takes” are aimed at current partners who fear commitment; in the former, a boyfriend takes photos off the fridge because he finds them too sentimental. “Therapist Daughter”, “Bee Museum” and “Hyperventilating” address exes: in “Bee Museum”, a memory of a museum visit is tied to a happy time and the fading of first love is accepted as okay, while “Hyperventilating” sets the count of a calming breathing exercise against the countdown to the end of a relationship (“You’re hyperventilating, 7, 8, 9”). “Conversation” was prompted by the stubborn views of one of their mother’s dates and addresses how older generations refuse to accept new perspectives. “Wishing Stone” is the album’s sweetest moment: a stone with a white line is found on the shore, and according to folklore a wish comes true if you can follow the line all the way around without a break. The album’s central message is that when change is out of our hands, it can still be a good thing.
