Fiddlers Sam Sweeney and Grace Smith, acclaimed masters of English traditional music, have recorded their debut duo album, Morning of May. Two fiddles in conversation is a familiar sound in many folk traditions, but it is heard less often in English instrumental music. The musicians set out to discover what happens when two fiddlers meet on this repertoire: one carries the melody while the other “seconds,” weaving harmony and rhythm around it, elevating the tune and subtly reshaping the ground beneath it.
They sourced material from manuscripts and tune collections, including some obscure archives. Some finds turned out to be complete hidden gems; others needed careful restoration, with rough edges smoothed through playing; and tiny fragments became almost entirely reimagined pieces. Alongside the old tunes sit several original compositions by the duo, written in the same spirit of curiosity and continuity.
The album rests on the idea that no tradition exists in isolation: English music has always been shaped by movement, encounters and exchange. Traces of Scottish, Irish, French and Scandinavian music can be heard as part of the fabric of the tradition itself. The duo champions not an imagined purity but a living tradition, strong in its ability to welcome new influences while keeping its own character. The result sounds both ancient and immediate — not a definitive statement, but the beginning of an exploration.
