The Chordettes, a female vocal group from Sheboygan, Wisconsin, were among the most recognisable and influential groups of their kind in American music of the 1950s and early 1960s. Their trademark was silky harmonies, playful arrangements and a polished blend of pop and vocal-group tradition. The quartet first became known through national radio performances and then turned into chart favourites: during their “golden decade” of 1951–1962 they released a string of classic singles that still win new listeners today.
Their early repertoire includes “Runnin’ Wild,” “Moonlight on the Ganges” and “Love’s Old Sweet Song.” The breakthrough and pinnacle was “Mr Sandman,” a timeless landmark of pop music. Alongside it stand “Humming Bird,” “The Wedding,” “Eddie My Love” and the elegant ballad “Born to Be With You.” Among the lighter harmony showcases are “Lay Down Your Arms,” the dreamy “Teen Age Goodnight,” “Just Between You and Me,” “Soft Sands” and the bubbly, chart-topping “Lollipop.” By the early 1960s the group moved smoothly toward a more modern pop sound: “Zorro,” “No Other Arms, No Other Lips,” “A Girl’s Work Is Never Done” and a stylish rendition of “Never on Sunday.” All these recordings are collected on “Doo Wop Darlings 1951–62,” where Side A covers the early material and the signature hit, and Side B the later repertoire up to the shift to 1960s pop.
