Richard - Loving You To Death (2026) [Hi-Res]

Richard - Loving You To Death (2026) [Hi-Res]

BAND/ARTIST: Richard

Montréal musician Richard Wenger, a member of Library L’Amour and one of the founders of the Temple label, releases his solo debut Loving You To Death on STROOM. He has previously recorded a wealth of material under different names: Analord-style acid as Dj Medallion, deep bleep as Richard Lamb, outsider house as R Wong, and the doomy synth pop EP Premier Caprice with Yasmine Ixe as Library L’Amour. On the new album, released simply as Richard, he turns the ambient remnants of ideas into proper songs that reach back toward the lost years of the 2000s. The idea emerged when he grew tired of turning guitar riffs into “long drawn out ambient pieces”: in his words, everything is too slick, impressive and unmemorable, so he kept the recordings bare and made them without a band. The result is hypnagogic bedroom pop with a wistful emo twang: ramshackle, reverb-laced, melancholy miniatures with squashed drum machine rhythms and rainy riffs inspired by Durutti Column. The music has the same charm as the first albums by Elliott Smith: Wenger processes his voice in a similar way, squeezing out heartbreaking harmonies that stay on the right side of mawkish. References range from The Smiths to American Football, and the production is sharpened by Montreal’s DIY scene. TR-606-style drums on Anything offset his coolly moaned words, while the slowed, slightly sloppy riffs of Black and Blue Hour give the track a slow, dreamy quality that fits with recent work by fellow Canadian Patrick Flegel (Cindy Lee). The album suits fans of American Football, Ariel Pink and Elliott Smith.
