Joshua Sabin - Caochan (2026)

Joshua Sabin - Caochan (2026)

BAND/ARTIST: Joshua Sabin

Scottish composer and sound artist Joshua Sabin releases the album Caochan, which looks at the human experience of landscape and time through a deep-time lens. Landscape and time appear as fluid, porous terrains where matter and perception merge, vanish and surface anew. The album is built on five poems by Scottish modernist writer Nan Shepherd (1893–1981), author of The Living Mountain, regarded as one of the most influential books on the natural world: Real Presence, Underground, Achiltibuie, Singing Burn and Summit of Corrie Etchachan. Each poem is set to music through a distinctive process: every change of note corresponds to a syllable, the melodic phrasing follows the rhythm and cadence of speech, and harmony and textures convey the meaning of the words and the ideas behind them. The poems take on physicality: words scatter through crystalline spring waters, drones writhe like forming igneous rock, and melodies soar like cataracts of wind. In this way Sabin preserves the form and meaning of Shepherd’s poetry while exploring impermanence, existentialism and deep time in relation to nature. He performs and records every instrument himself: bowed cymbals, chimes, cello, chanter, pedal organ, concertina, low-D whistle, bass drum, bodhran, saxophone and rocks. He then reshapes the recordings into densely layered sonic gestures and hybrid timbres. Working in electroacoustic composition, field recording and music for moving image, Sabin turns the sounds of transit systems, electromagnetic signals and vocal archives into sonic environments about memory and perception. He studied composition at the University of Edinburgh and debuted with Terminus Drift (Subtext Recordings, 2017), based on recordings from Kyoto, Tokyo, Berlin, Glasgow and Edinburgh. His next album, Sutarti (2019), grew out of archival recordings of Lithuanian sutartinės, whose vocal structures he reworked through electronic means. He has performed at Berghain/Säule and OSA Festival, and his work has appeared on NTS and at MUTEK Mexico.
