Mexican R&B singer Mariana de Miguel, performing as Girl Ultra and one of the few genuine breakout stars of the genre in her country, has recorded the collaborative album “RRRomeo” with the electro-funk duo Chromeo. The record’s concept is “romance as rebellion,” and it sounds like the soundtrack to an imaginary telenovela: nostalgic, “canned” 1980s-style synthesizer arrangements, humorous flashbacks, and tales of rebellion that seem to cry out for subtitles on a series broadcast somewhere in the Balkans. The album’s strength lies in its self-irony: Chromeo have never taken themselves too seriously, and Girl Ultra happily joins in the game. For the duo, it is a return to solid ground after their 2024 album “Adult Contemporary,” devoted to the theme of “staying funky in your 30s and 40s.”
Among the tracks, “Denisse” stands out: with its synth pan pipes, it bears an uncanny resemblance to the theme tune of Sam Campbell’s absurdist comedy series “Make That Movie.” “Tomás,” recorded with Empress Of, fares slightly better thanks to an unexpected sitar. “Ironía” sounds so familiar that it feels like something you’ve heard before, though the source of the resemblance can’t quite be placed.
Tracklist:
1. Girl Ultra - ¡El groove de Romeo!
2. Girl Ultra - Te Caigo
3. Girl Ultra - Mentirasmentiras
4. Girl Ultra - RRRomeo
5. Girl Ultra - Denisse
6. Girl Ultra - Ironía
7. Girl Ultra - Ramera
8. Girl Ultra - Tomás
