Fatima Al Qadiri - 3TWI (2026) [Hi-Res]

BAND/ARTIST: Fatima Al Qadiri

Kuwaiti-raised producer Fatima Al Qadiri, now based between Berlin and Los Angeles, has returned to the label Hyperdub with the EP “3TWI” after a stretch of scoring Hollywood films and documentaries. It is her first release on the label since the album “Medieval Femme” five years ago. The new work is her own take on two forms of West Asian dance music: dabke and choubi, the latter popular in Iraq and the Gulf states.

The title comes from Kuwaiti women’s slang for a lecherous old man and literally means “male alley cat.” The musical foundation remains recognizable: moody yet elegantly lyrical melodies. Over them lies vocal work that is almost entirely improvised in Kuwaiti Arabic, Classical Arabic, and the “3eemi” dialect of Farsi.

The vocalists play a central role in the recording. Gumar, who already appeared on Fatima’s 2023 EP, sings melismatic parts on the ethereal slow steppa track “zan kardeh ya nah”, and on the stately, swaying “ta3alay” her voice is run through autotune. Bobo Secret and Lama3an work in arrangements close to choubi: on the slow, trance-like “7ilween”, only a shade away from DJ Niraha, and on the sleazy, downbeat, creased “xilim”.

Tracklist:
1. Fatima Al Qadiri - 7ilween
2. Fatima Al Qadiri - zan kardeh ya nah
3. Fatima Al Qadiri - zilim
4. Fatima Al Qadiri - ta3alay
