Don Covay is a songwriter who wrote “Chain of Fools” for Aretha Franklin and “Pony Time” — a US No. 1 — for Chubby Checker. Beyond that, he also pursued a solo career as a singer. The key recordings of this period — the 1965 debut album “Mercy!” and the 1966 follow-up “See-Saw” — have now been reissued together as a “2-in-1” compilation.
The centerpiece of the debut is “Mercy, Mercy”: the song topped the US R&B chart, reached No. 35 on the pop chart, and became a soul classic; it was also covered by the early Rolling Stones. The then-unknown Jimi Hendrix took part in the recording, and his guitar part, reminiscent of Curtis Mayfield’s style, is regarded as one of the musician’s first studio sessions.
The second album, “See-Saw,” emerged from the collaboration between the Atlantic label and Memphis’s Stax studio, with Steve Cropper participating. It is a peak of mid-60s southern soul, already showing a turn toward funk and anticipating the coming boom of Muscle Shoals recordings. Together, the two records show how the soul of that era evolved toward a more rhythmic, funky sound.
