Montreal-born DJ, producer and songwriter Gayance, who has lived in Lisbon for several years, is releasing her second album, “roaming”, on Tru Thoughts. Her first record, “Mascarade” (Rhythm Section International, 2023), was a breakthrough and earned a shortlist nomination for the Polaris Music Prize. Afterwards she faced intense personal and professional pressure. Moving to Lisbon and turning to herbalism and spirituality gave her space to recover, and the new work grew out of that period.
The album took shape over roughly a decade of life in transit: Brazil, Brussels, Amsterdam and beyond. Gayance says she never planned these songs as a single project. They capture nine years of friendship, constant relocation and people left behind. Some tracks are written directly about those she left, keeping raw feelings with no “edits” for polish. The sound is global and fluid, with house, R&B and gospel alongside the artist’s Haitian roots. Through it she reflects on the “political movement” of the diaspora and redefines her relationship with both place and self.
The central themes are release, transformation and self-preservation. “Better For My Heart” (feat. Judith Little D) evolved over several years into a high-energy fusion of house, R&B and gospel. It is an anthem of emotional purging and radical self-worth. “Ensemble,” the focus track and Gayance’s first song in French, examines “chosen family” and the need for boundaries. “Kind Silence” reframes silence as an act of protection, especially in relationships where one side seeks control. “GOSSIP” is the most unfiltered moment, a candid conversation about toxic cycles and a way to close a painful chapter.
“Podjab” (feat. Waahli) returns to Haitian roots, channelling the energy and spirit of resistance of the carnival genre Mizik Rasin, and celebrates the diaspora’s right to liberation. “hellooooo????” (co-produced by funkywhat, feat. Magi Merlin) acts as a tongue-in-cheek counterweight, turning the theme of connection into a confident celebration of presence and success. The closing track, “Agua” (feat. NARCY & De.Ville), moves into the spiritual and political. Its mantra “Stay focused?” holds that true resistance rests on stillness, grounding and being present in one’s own body. It is a response to global unrest and a call for somatic healing, a practice Gayance strongly believes in.
The artist has been warmly received by international press and radio: Toronto Star, DJ Mag, Crack Magazine, Mixmag, Exclaim!, La Presse, Cult MTL, Montreal Gazette, as well as Radio-Canada / CBC and RIBF / Tarmac. In the UK, BBC Radio 6 Music has supported her, including an in-depth interview with Gilles Peterson and Jamz Supernova.
