Scottish harpist Rachel Hair, who comes from Ullapool in the north-west of Scotland, has released Hello Harp. It is her first fully solo harp recording since her debut, Hubcaps and Potholes (2007). In the years between, she recorded with her trio and in duos with Manx singer Ruth Keggin and Scottish guitarist Ron Jappy; the new album is a deliberate return to her roots. Hair grew up on the sound of bagpipes and the rhythms of traditional music, and it shows in the material.
The record opens with a set of Gaelic strathspeys. She has a special affinity for the form: its sharp, crisp rhythms suit the attack of the harp strings perfectly. She also cares about the stories behind the tunes, because they add narrative depth and enrich the listening experience.
Much of the repertoire is traditional or drawn from the classic piping canon. There are also tunes from the Isle of Man, where Hair teaches every month and has become immersed in the local tradition, as well as from Cornwall, Ireland and Scotland. These are joined by her own compositions written for people, places and even the family dog.
According to Hair, solo playing lets her stay true to what she does at solo gigs, where it is all about the tunes: she loves strong melodies as much as strong rhythms. There are moments of reflection, but overall the album is a celebration of the harp and of the sound of the Scottish harp that audiences want to hear. Hello Harp is available on CD (rachelhair.com), as a download on Bandcamp and iTunes, and on streaming platforms.
