Austrian singer-songwriter C. H. Comper, performing as Prinz Grizzley, has released the album "Tilda" (2026) on DoWhWa Records — a work that holds its own against American releases in Americana and Country. Just as the Alpine western "Das finstere Tal" (2014) showed that western motifs travel freely around the world and take root in Austria, this album transplants American roots music onto Austrian soil.
Comper wrote all fourteen songs himself. Three are short instrumentals: "The Long March (Troubled Times Ahead)", with dramatic trumpets and an orchestral feel in the manner of Ennio Morricone; the Celtic Folk-oriented "Dance Of The Shovel (The Foreign Son)"; and "The Bridge Shuffle (Death Of A Boy)", a sound experiment that is dispensable on its own but justified by the album's concept.
The album is built on the story of his grandparents, whose lives were shaped by the experience of World War II. It portrays hard-working people trying to get by and longing for the security of home, yet constantly living under threat — a threat whose form shifts with the era. The balance of hopes and fears, the everyday and the exceptional, makes the material universal and relevant to today's crisis-ridden times. The range runs from the intense opener "Put Me Down (A Foreign Man)" — voice and acoustic guitar only — to the almost churchlike closer "Watch Me Rising (Rest Easy My Old Heart)".
Most songs are Folk with a noticeable Country tinge. In the Singer/Songwriter tradition, standouts include "A Mountain To Be Taimed (The Struggeling)", the melodic "Pull Me Up (Not Everything Is Perfect)" and the gentle "Guess I Need Protection (Homecomming)". The peak is "WWII (Surviving)", where the vocalist turns more nasal and changes his timbre. "Rose On The Garbarge Hill (The Daughter)" with slide guitar, the acoustic "Tilda Lee (Processing A Loss)" and the lively "Reign On, Queen Of The Mountains (A Price To Pay)" lean toward Alternative Country. "The Calling (Settling Down)" is close to Gospel; religious motifs appear in the lyrics here and elsewhere.
At the album's core are sudden events that upend lives, and how people cope with them. The cover, with the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens in the background, symbolizes this. In the end, "Tilda" is a cohesive concept of stories about roots and uprooting, dreams and traumas, with several outstanding tracks at the crossroads of Folk, Country, Americana and Gospel.
