Permanent Change Part 1, the new album by the American indie rock band Matt Pond PA, led by singer-songwriter Matt Pond, is built from sketches of everyday life: walking the dog, dozing by the lake, sleepless nights, loneliness, awkwardness and love. Through these small moments, minor tragedies and humble victories, Pond looks for the extraordinary in the ordinary, in the pauses between events. It sounds like an intimate one-on-one conversation: a reflection on his own consciousness set against larger themes of life and death, truth and storytelling, solitude and togetherness.

The songs rest on precise landscape details, both physical and emotional, and on universal feelings any listener recognizes. The opener "Endless Summer" paints gasoline in the water, a distorted Tom Petty on a car stereo and leaps into the Connecticut River from the Ledyard Bridge, and the price of letting go of what's real is a line about young liars who turn into old liars and then into dust. "The Stars Below" hangs between the jump and the splash. In "Learn How to Lose," a touring musician admits that life on the road demands learning how to lose. "Soda Gun" turns into a strange deep-woods party that ends with a goodbye to the sky.

Pond calls the album an endless, fading summer afternoon: an embrace of imperfection, a chance to let go of worry for one brief moment, a look back at mistakes with pride, and an attempt to drop the feeling that life is a constant audition. He conceived Permanent Change as a "sprawling and wild" work of two or three volumes. The band, which began in Philadelphia and now lives in the Hudson Valley, has released 15 albums, among them Emblems, Several Arrows Later, The Dark Leaves, The State of Gold and The Ballad of the Natural Lines, along with countless EPs and beloved songs such as "Measure 3," "New Hampshire," "Lily Two," "Halloween," "Brooklyn Stars," "Specks" and "Love to Get Used." Matt Pond PA remains a living organism that is permanently changing.
