Mexican singer Ana Karen G. Barajas lives on an island in Hong Kong, and her voice messages carry the sound of birdsong and a baby's breathing. Between giving birth to her son, surviving Covid and writing a PhD, she still completed Bestiaria, the new album by her trio Karen y los Remedios and the successor to Silencio (2023). The group also includes guitarist Z.A.M.P.A. (Guillermo Berbeyer) and Mexico City producer Jiony (Jonathan Muriel). These experiences shaped the record: its heroines are goddesses and creatures from different cultures and legends who unapologetically reclaim all things feminine and ask no one's permission.
The sound continues the line of Silencio: slowed-down cumbia rebajada with a sheen of trip-hop and dreamy dream pop, built on Ana Karen's ethereal vocals. The music the trio grew up with in the barrio is now unravelled into its separate threads. Besides the signature style, the album has near-ballads, traditional cumbia, powerful cumbiatón and 420 styles.
The twelve songs are laid out like a tarot reading: symbols and tales that resonate differently for each listener, drifting between magic, desire, nurture and perhaps death. The lyrics are ambiguous, at times love poems, at times a mirror. "Mayahuel," a downtempo cumbia, tells of the goddess of agave and fertility, who died, fell from the sky and was reborn as the plant that gives us mezcal. The album opens with "Curandera," where spectral vocals merge with horror synths and the beat pulls listeners onto the dancefloor. It continues with the more introspective "Ninfa" and a majestic cover of "Satanás" by Tropa Vallenata, journeying through landscapes of desire and lust.
