The French project Abhra is led by Julien Pontvianne. Its name comes from a Sanskrit word meaning both atmosphere and emptiness. It began as a musical exploration of the Journal of Henry David Thoreau, the American philosopher, poet, and scholar who placed nature at the center of his thought and championed a kind of ascetic hedonism, a austere yet pleasure-affirming way of living. That idea has run through Abhra's music ever since, which examines resonance, the forms of song, and slowness, all with a rare delicacy and restraint. The group's second album, "Seven Poems on Water," released in 2022, was acclaimed by critics.

The new album is conceived as a sequel to that record and is devoted to drought. Pontvianne was driven to make it by climate disruption, which he has observed partly through the eyes of his brother, a researcher in one of the most arid regions of France. The core idea behind the project is that water should be understood not as a deposit, like oil, but as a cycle. What runs out is not a stock of resources but the balance of natural cycles: deforestation, for instance, reduces rainfall, while warming increases evaporation and thus the total amount of water in circulation. The problem is not a shortage of water as such but its unjust and violent distribution. Arid zones will always receive less, leading to declining agricultural productivity and ever more conflict.
