The British-Italian-Japanese trio Holy Tongue — drummer Valentina Magaletti, producer Al Wootton and bassist Susumu Mukai — have released their second album, "Basilikum", in which musique concrète, post-punk, free psych, kosmische and dub are fused into a sound almost completely unmoored from time and place. For listeners who love The Pop Group, Popol Vuh, Equiknoxx and John T. Gast, it is essential listening.
The group were always strong: their 2023 debut "Deliverance and Spiritual Warfare" introduced the spectrum of their influences, while 2024's "The Tumbling Psychic Joy of Now", made with Shackleton, already pushed into more esoteric territory. On "Basilikum", those influences finally become a sound of their own. The album opens with an intro just over a minute long: a squashed, saturated beat dilated by Wootton's tape echoes, guitars that sound like downtown New York, and chewed-up piano stabs.
On "Coca", the experimentation is pegged to a Scratcha-style riddim, where electronic and acoustic drums sit alongside an eccentric vocal turn from Bristol-based artist Dali de Saint Paul. On "Orange 28", Mukai leads with a dubby bassline, Wootton adds eerie woodwind, and an unexpectedly full-on performance from Magaletti carries the track into new territory. Wootton, whose recent releases — the drum machine-led "Rhythm Archives" and his debut on Sähkö, "CRUX" — are devoted to fusing early electronic sounds with contemporary bass music, contributes unsettling Ussachevsky-inspired swells and stabs reminiscent of Silver Apples, while balancing Dali's spiraling vocals.
The music was sculpted from improvisation sessions in the Swiss Alps and London, using vintage rhythm boxes and the trio's "instinctive interplay", and then meticulously edited. On "Vuoto 25", Magaletti's live drums are swallowed by tape echo and then drop out to reveal a grubby 4/4. The climax is the closing "Nature": ten minutes of ritualistic, trance-inducing rubbery drums and tangled strings that would not sound out of place on a Shackleton record.
