"The Y2K Instrumentals" delivers the complete instrumental versions of the tracks from Screwball's acclaimed debut LP, "Y2K: The Album", originally released in 2000. Reissued digitally via Tuff City Records, this collection spotlights the raw production framework behind the Queensbridge hardcore hip-hop group consisting of Blaq Poet, Hostyle, KL, and Solo.
The project features iconic production work from a legendary lineup of East Coast beatmakers, including DJ Premier, Marley Marl, Pete Rock, Godfather Don, and Mike Heron. Stripped of the vocal performances, the album showcases quintessential late-90s East Coast boom-bap architecture.
Focusing strictly on the beats, the release highlights heavy drum breaks, chopping jazz and soul samples, gritty basslines, and signature turntable work. It serves as an essential archival release capturing the sonic identity of New York's underground hip-hop scene at the turn of the millennium.
