Ramin Bijan, Gunther Osburg and Maurice Summen are long-time companions on the German indie scene who have played together in various lineups for more than twenty years. They already have two active bands, Die Türen and Der Mann, both of which release albums regularly. The trio has now launched a third parallel project, Investment, and is preparing the album Wieder nur Lieder ("Just Songs Again").
The idea behind the record is counterfactual pop music: if timeless classics could be written forty years ago, nothing prevents writing them today, especially since their sound is already known. Flawless songwriting and sound design combine a vintage foundation with modern lighting, like a mid-century teak sideboard fitted with an RGB strip. The reference points lie between 10cc and CCR, NRBQ and The Cars, La Düsseldorf and P-Funk, as well as the Eagles, all run through the "rubber-band" sonic aesthetic of the Commodore 64.
The first single, "Pink Flamingo," is a wistful power ballad with a glimmer of hope. The flamingo appears here as the quintessential bird of pop culture, a sign of longing, wanderlust and artificiality. It trails a string of associations: Bugsy Siegel's Flamingo Casino in Las Vegas, plastic birds in front yards, the John Waters film, Jan Hammer's Miami Vice theme, a Soft Cell song and a Christopher Cross album cover. For Investment, the bird becomes an image of youthful dreams that flew away yet might still return. The song compares them to the flamingos that vanished from Zwillbrocker Venn, where the birds did in fact return this year.
The band made the cover with Brazilian art director Nader Shousha. It shows an omnipresent AI slot machine, a down-and-out cousin of casino capitalism in the age of prediction markets, sports betting and the tokenization of culture.
