The collaborative album Phren by sound engineer Marta Salogni and guitarist Stefano Pilia, released on Maple Death Records in partnership with Canicola edizioni for the Opale series, is an exploration of sonic memory, resonance, and transformation. Conceptually inspired by Sarah Mazzetti's visual universe and the ancient Greek term "phren" — referring to the seat of thought and emotion — the work treats sound as a living, evolving substance.
The album's sonic architecture relies on an intricate hybrid processing system: Pilia's abstract guitar signals are routed through modular filtering, amplification, and tape echo setups before being fed into Salogni's Revox reel-to-reel tape machines for further spatial modulation and delay. Instead of witnessing the decay of recorded loops, this system operates as a generative space for new textures and harmonies within the realms of ambient and experimental electronic music.
Extending the legacies of avant-garde and tape music pioneers such as Éliane Radigue, Philip Jeck, and Pauline Oliveros, Phren features six distinct movements. Highlights include "ma la mia anima è testimone," built upon a microtonal just intonation system derived from Harry Partch's tonality diamond, and the closing movement, which seamlessly incorporates processed fragments of 16th-century sacred polyphony by Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina.
