Self-taught singer-songwriter Michael Hurley's 1964 debut album, «First Songs», stands as a foundational document of American freak-folk and outsider folk. Recorded when Hurley was just 22 years old, the album captures a contemplative, intimate sound inspired by his upbringing in rural Pennsylvania, departing from the frantic energy of his earlier itinerant travels, as noted by producer Frederic Ramsey Jr.. Containing 12 original compositions across 50 minutes, Hurley's idiosyncratic songwriting on «First Songs» has been widely influential, with tracks covered by prominent modern acts such as Cat Power, Vetiver, Espers, and Violent Femmes.
