The album Exploratory I and II by legendary American avant-garde composer Phill Niblock is a two-part foundational study in microtonal drone and hypnotic minimalism. The work is built upon overlapping sustained tones performed by acclaimed musicians, including the Arditti String Quartet, multi-instrumentalist David Watson, and the Swiss chamber group Phoenix Ensemble Basel. Through dense layering and psychoacoustic interference patterns, an outwardly static wall of sound reveals complex, slowly shifting harmonic micro-structures. Released via Matière Mémoire in a limited edition of 300 CDs, this work stands as an essential document showcasing Niblock's profound influence on experimental music, drone, and the lowercase movement.
