In 1980, Detroit-based vocalist Lady Jane (Jane Brice) recorded her sole studio album, Here I Am Baby. Following a flood that destroyed physical copies and the subsequent loss of the master tapes, the recording fell into complete obscurity for decades until its rediscovery in 2022.
The album offers a versatile blend of Soul, Funk, and Disco. Driving, heavy-groove tracks such as Never Lived In The Ghetto and Space Flight are balanced by the gentle, intimate mood of the title cut, Here I Am Baby. The closing number, She’s A Star, written by Jane Brice herself, channels her personal experience of surviving childhood abuse into an empowering statement of self-belief and resilience.
