Musical group The Flying Hats has released their sophomore studio album, Ups, following their debut record The Return of the Flying Hats and a standalone single featuring "The Blender" and "Hot Cakes." The new project highlights the further development of the band's signature sound, constructed around a fusion of classic Jamaican reggae and New Orleans funk.
The album's sonic concept serves as a tribute to Hammond organ melodies and early 1970s rhythm traditions. The tracks seamlessly bridge elements of Kingston boss-reggae, heavy riddims echoing the production style of Bunny Lee and The Aggrovators, and syncopated backbeats inspired by The Meters and Allen Toussaint. The tracklist spans energetic up-tempo cuts ("Kick About," "Double Up," "Market Day") and heavy organ-driven grooves referencing Dawn Penn ("Lightning Bottle") to laid-back skank pieces ("Stout," "Traffic Light") and wistful closing tracks ("So Long," "Step Up").
Tracklist:
1-1 The Flying Hats - Lightning Bottle [4:16]
1-2 The Flying Hats - Kick About [3:32]
1-3 The Flying Hats - Traffic Light [2:59]
1-4 The Flying Hats - Double Up [2:37]
1-5 The Flying Hats - Market Day [3:34]
1-6 The Flying Hats - Pinball [4:15]
1-7 The Flying Hats - Stout [3:24]
1-8 The Flying Hats - So Long [3:44]
1-9 The Flying Hats - Step Up [5:09]
