French neofolk ensemble SKÁLD presents their album Ørlǫg, marking their debut release on Napalm Records. The ten-track record centers conceptually on the Norse idea of fate, destiny, and the spiritual roots of humanity. The group recreates the atmosphere of the skaldic era by combining traditional Nordic bowed instruments, harps, lutes, horns, kantele, and flutes with intricate vocal arrangements that feature alternating female and male lead vocals alongside throat singing.
The compositional structure of the album leverages vivid contrasts while drawing heavily from Norse mythology and folklore. "Draumakona" explores the female tradition of shamanic prophecy, "Ratatoskr" invokes the mythical squirrel through rhythmic throat singing, and "Dǫkksalir" adopts a lullaby aesthetic to represent sirens. The tracklist also features an interpretation of the traditional Norwegian folk song "Heiemo og Nykkjen" and incorporates children's voices in "Veit barnit." The closing track, "Eldr ok iss," references the creation myth of the universe born from the collision of fire and ice, emphasizing the dark atmosphere and dramatic arc of the release.
