Albéniz's *Ibéria* ranks among the finest piano cycles of the genre. Legendary status is accorded, in particular, to the recordings by Alicia de Larrocha (especially her first of three versions, made for EMI prior to her move to Decca) and by Esteban Sánchez (on Ensayo; also available more recently on Brilliant Classics). It was purely by chance that I stumbled upon the recording by Rena Kyriakou—originally a Vox release, reissued here by Membran. I felt compelled to add this one to the list of legendary recordings!
Kyriakou demonstrates that a non-Spaniard can deliver a convincing performance of *Ibéria* without resorting to folk-style clichés or excessive romanticism. Like Sánchez, she captivates the listener from the very first note; however, unlike Larrocha’s 1970s recording, the textures here are far more transparent, and—much like in Rafael Orozco’s performance—the sweeping arcs of tension are built up in a compelling manner.
Unlike the aforementioned pianists, she possesses a distinctive, powerful tone of her own. Her interpretation prioritizes clarity (*clarté*) over subtle tonal shading; it is, in a sense, distinctly polyphonic.
All that remains is to quote from an Argentine Amazon review:
"This set is not only a fabulous choice but a successful purchase (keeping in mind the artistic stature of this excellent pianist). So, please, don't forget to acquire this album."
