The sixth full-length album, Distorting Time, by the American musical project Radiator Hospital, led by Sam Cook-Parrott, captures the evolution of the project from its origins as a solo bedroom recording act into a mature indie rock quartet. Following the release of Can't Make Any Promises in 2023, the musician avoided nostalgic reflection, focusing instead on developing a fresh sonic direction. This shift was prompted by an unexpected late-2025 tour offer, which led Sam Cook-Parrott to experiment with a new live performance method: capturing all instrumental backing tracks on a 4-track cassette recorder while performing solely as a lead vocalist.
Marking the group's debut on Lame-O Records, the 13-track record was produced at home on cassette equipment, with additional refinements recorded at Jeff Zeigler's Uniform Recording studio in Philadelphia. Drawing stylistic inspiration from the minimalist post-punk and lo-fi aesthetics of acts like Young Marble Giants and Tall Dwarfs, the album leverages the creative constraints of 4-track recording to examine themes of passing time, aging, and the changing perception of artistic work.
