Mastodon - Marrow Deep (2026) Hi-Res

Mastodon have walked a tragic road over the years—a journey that has repeatedly yielded magnificent albums fueled by grief and haunted by the loss of loved ones. Following Crack the Skye (2009)—a tribute to drummer Brann Dailor’s sister—Emperor of Sand (2017), written in part by guitarist Bill Kelliher after his mother’s passing, and Hushed and Grim, recorded in the wake of manager Nick John’s death, Marrow Deep naturally sparked intense debate long before its release. One's thoughts inevitably turn to Brent Hinds, the guitarist killed in a car accident just months after departing the group—an event that left an indelible mark on his bandmates. Yet regardless of the circumstances, this new record was always going to be made without him. What we have here is a Mastodon 2.0, now featuring the exceptional six-stringer Nick Johnston in its ranks.

Torn between heavy sludge and soaring progressive passages, Marrow Deep is another triumphant success that proves just how singular Mastodon remain. As with their previous records, a natural balance quickly takes shape, striking a harmony between the raw, driving energy of "Barbarians Blood" and "A Vampire’s Demeanor," and the more melodic textures of "In the Ruins" and "The Vanishing." Johnston seamlessly finds his place, while João Nogueira delivers gorgeous keyboard lines in pure prog fashion on "The Three Fates." Marrow Deep also brings together a stellar lineup of guest appearances—Josh Homme, Clutch’s Neil Fallon, Converge’s Nate Newton and Ben Koller, Joe Duplantier, Geezer Butler, and Lamb of God’s Randy Blythe—proof of the immense respect the band commands within the scene. While Brent Hinds is undeniably missed, the group proves there is life after losing one of their core pillars. Mastodon remain a brilliant, monstrous force, firmly anchored at the summit thanks to a sound that only they can forge.
