The British-African cross-cultural project Baka Beyond, founded in 1992 by guitarist Martin Cradick and singer Su Hart, has released Sing the World Awake, their first full-length album in twelve years. Issued via March Hare Music, the record encapsulates over three decades of exploring the vocal traditions of the Baka people of Cameroon and integrating them into Western European Celtic folk.
The sonic foundation of the record relies on field recordings captured in the rainforests of Cameroon, layered with polyphonic Central African vocals, Irish and Breton fiddle melodies, and the rhythmic drive of afrobeats and Celtic rock. By weaving together vocal styles from Guinea, Ghana, and the Central African region with acoustic folk rock, Baka Beyond crafts a seamless polyrhythmic soundscape. The project continues its ongoing ethnomusicological dialogue, uniting tribal forest vocals and West African percussion with traditional West European string arrangements.
