In the mid-1990s, the Detroit-based duo Insane Clown Posse built their early career around evil clown personas, delivering hip-hop driven by explicit lyrics and aggressive stage antics. Following the commercial failure of their album Riddle Box, which ended their initial deal with Jive, a loyal local fanbase helped the group secure a contract with Hollywood Records. In 1996, the label invested one million dollars into recording The Great Milenko, bringing in high-profile guest musicians like Slash to inject elements of heavy metal and rap rock into their sound. On the official release date, Hollywood Records pulled the album from shelves over its offensive content, unintentionally sparking nationwide media controversy that launched Insane Clown Posse to fame and turned their satirical gangsta rap into a late-1990s cult phenomenon.
