South African trumpeter, flugelhornist, and vocalist Hugh Masekela, widely celebrated as the father of South African Jazz and a global musical icon, left behind a profound artistic legacy. His sixth solo album, recorded in 1967, marked a crucial turning point in his career just prior to his international breakthrough. The record displays a distinctly Pop-oriented approach to arrangement, blending expressive brass melodies with his powerful vocal delivery. Reimagining contemporary hits of the era, including tracks by The Beach Boys and The Beatles, the musician seamlessly fused Afro-Jazz heritage with the vibrant mainstream sounds of the 1960s.
