Music for Colourspace is Pete Ardron's second solo album, written for "Colourspace," a touring inflatable installation by British sculptor Maurice Agis. Ardron first experienced the piece as a student at Surrey University in 1981, where the accompanying music — curated by his lecturer Robin Maconie — was improvised and spiky, leaving him wanting something "swooshy and wooshy, lush and mysterious" instead. A second visit, to the Barbican in October 1987, gave him the chance to play Agis a piece he'd just written; Agis invited him on the spot to score the installation's upcoming Los Angeles staging.
Inside the structure, two looped tapes — "Yellow-Green" (19 minutes) and "Red-Blue" (23 minutes) — ran simultaneously, drifting in and out of phase over the course of a day, with speaker pairs hidden inside colour-coded clusters and positioned to cross each other so the sound circled the listener. The mix a visitor heard depended entirely on where they stood inside the space.
In 2004, Ardron revisited the tapes and mixed them into two standalone pieces: "Within The Experience," a calmer, fluid distillation of both loops, and "Within The Mind," a more intense piece recorded in colour-paired takes with the other channels muted. Restoring 16-year-old tape brought some unavoidable degradation alongside real sonic gains from newer technology.
This 2026 edition brings the two layers together — the raw 1988 installation loops and the 2004 finished mixes — under one release. The album sits early in Ardron's catalogue, right after his debut Crystal Matrices, and its success led directly to an invitation to record Goddess for a new age label, a project whose fallout eventually pushed him away from that scene altogether.
