London-based musical project Amamikyu, founded by multi-instrumentalist Phil MFU (formerly of Vanishing Twin) and Okinawan singer and sanshin player Yuko Tsubame, released their self-titled debut album on the Freaksville label. The project's name references the creator goddess Amamikyu from Ryukyuan mythology, establishing a strong conceptual link to Okinawan culture and folklore.
The sonic architecture of the nine tracks merges traditional Japanese min'yō folk melodies and Okinawan chants with experimental psychedelic rock, electronic production, and noise elements. Yuko Tsubame's electric sanshin lines intersect with Phil MFU's analog synthesizers, samplers, and dense percussion structures. Guest contributors include Shoko Asaga on taisho koto and nature field recordings, guitarist Benjamin Schoos, and flautist Clementine March. The tracklist balances reimagined traditional folk standards (such as Akata Sun Dounchi and Mimura Bushi) and adaptations of works by Tsuneo Fukuhara with original compositions Shisa No Ha and Uzu Maki. The group's live presentation expands the recorded material through custom visual design and lighting by Pat Grimm and Reuben Sutherland.
