Given his global reputation, Genevan flautist Emmanuel Pahud—principal flute of the Berlin Philharmonic—has the freedom to record new works, knowing he can elevate them with the grace and richness of his playing. Previously arranged for violin by David Oistrakh with the composer's blessing, Sergei Prokofiev's beautiful Flute Sonata, Op. 94, is presented here in a deft and luminous orchestration by cellist and composer Stephan Koncz, Pahud’s colleague at the Berlin Philharmonic. Pahud's warm, agile flute works wonders in this arrangement, making it sound like an entirely original work. Dating back to 1993, American neo-romantic composer Christopher Rouse’s (1949–2019) Concerto for Flute and Strings was written in the shock following the senseless and brutal murder of a two-year-old English boy, who was tortured and beaten to death by two ten-year-old boys near a Liverpool shopping centre. Structured into five movements, the work draws inspiration from Celtic and Irish themes, with the central movement serving as an elegy dedicated to the memory of the tragic child. In Ceremony, written for Pahud in 2021, Japanese composer Toshio Hosokawa employs the flute in a shamanic ritual, evoking the presence of supernatural forces beyond our comprehension. It is a rich and demanding piece that utilizes the alto flute and piccolo alongside the traditional transverse flute.
