Irish singer-songwriter henry o henry, a Dublin native who has lived in the United States for over thirty years, released his debut solo album Apocrypha. After working for three decades in the trades, he developed a songwriting style bridging his Irish roots with American poetic tradition. Most of the album's material was composed on an inexpensive secondhand guitar.
Filmmaker Rick Alverson produced the recording sessions, convincing the artist to assemble the songs into a unified project. The recording lineup features multi-instrumentalists Eamon O'Leary and Ned Steves, recording engineer Peter Townsend (frequent collaborator of Will Oldham / Bonnie "Prince" Billy), vocalist Emilie Rex of Lean Year, and poet Callie Garnett. Across nine tracks, the album's sound draws from indie folk, acoustic singer-songwriter arrangements, and poetic chamber pop, echoing the sensibilities of John Cale, Nick Drake, and Leonard Cohen. The lyrics examine themes of immigration, memories of New York's 1990s East Village, and personal reflection shaped by literature and cinema.
