Release of a New Album Marking a New Artistic Frontier—His 23rd Overall. Haruomi Hosono, the pioneering Japanese musician, producer, composer, and founding member of Yellow Magic Orchestra and Happy End. Haruomi Hosono has spent more than five decades shaping a two-way dialogue between Japanese and American pop music. He co-founded Happy End in 1969, one of the first bands to prove rock lyrics could work in Japanese rather than English, and by 1978 had formed Yellow Magic Orchestra with Ryuichi Sakamoto and Yukihiro Takahashi; YMO's 1979 album Solid State Survivor topped the Japanese charts and helped define an entire vocabulary for electronic pop. His solo catalog manages some wild runs through folk, exotica, ambient, and techno, with a restlessness so profound that no single genre ever claimed him for long. That catholic approach has aged well: Vampire Weekend's Ezra Koenig has sampled his work, and Harry Styles borrowed the title of his 2022 album directly from Hosono's 1973 solo debut, Hosono House. A generation of younger listeners—Mac DeMarco, Ginger Root, and Cameron Winter among them—now cite him as a formative influence, turning Hosono, at 79, into a living reference point rather than a legacy act.

Yours Sincerely, his 23rd studio album, arrives seven years after his last collection of new solo material, a gap unusually long even by the patient pace he's kept over the past two decades. Built around three untranslatable Japanese concepts rooted in compassion and care—omoiyari, jihi, and boseiai—the record took two years to make and moves between tender, largely acoustic folk arrangements and more bubbling, exploratory pop production, often within the same song. Opener "Note of Mothership" pairs a gentle melodic frame with modern sonic details that keep shifting underneath it, while brief, poetic interludes like "To A Wild Rose" manage to simultaneously sound both like a lullaby and an elegy. "Sincerely" does something stranger: it reworks the Moonglows' 1954 doo-wop hit of the same name, rewriting the lyrics entirely in Japanese and repurposing a song about romantic yearning into something aligned with the album's broader interest in unconditional care. The move is consistent with his broader philosophy: Hosono has spent his whole career picking up genres considered corny or exhausted by serious listeners, from '50s exotica to Hawaiian steel guitar to easy-listening lounge pop, and repurposing them with total sincerity rather than as a wink. Doo-wop fits neatly into that same lineage: a style most artists in 2026 would only touch ironically, reframed here as sincere raw material rather than kitsch.Haruomi Hosono has released his 23rd album, *Yours Sincerely*, worldwide. Comprising ten tracks, the album explores themes of deep human consciousness—such as maternal instinct and compassion—and quietly depicts a sense of "harmony" that lies beyond an era of loneliness and turmoil. Throughout a career spanning 57 years since his debut, Hosono has consistently challenged himself to explore new musical expressions across genres including rock, techno, ambient, and experimental music. This album, which reflects his current artistic standpoint, is a serene, prayer-like work that reveals his new creative horizons and captures the shifting nature of our connection to the world.
