In 1983, British singer-songwriter Ben Watt released his debut indie album, North Marine Drive. The record topped the UK indie charts, steeped in the atmosphere of romantic despair, youthful angst, and the socio-political pressure of the Thatcher era. Imagery of a coastal port, grey skies, and cold ocean waves reflected in both the sound and the album cover, which captured Watt on a windswept pier in a posture of quiet resignation.
The title track relied on a looping guitar line and confessional lyrics of isolation and loss. However, shortly after, Ben Watt and Tracey Thorn formed Everything But the Girl, whose massive success within sophisti-pop, new wave bossa nova, and electronic pop completely overshadowed his solo debut.
