Disagreements with Arista Records over creative direction pushed Ministry to abandon their early commercial synth-pop sound in pursuit of a much darker sonic framework. Frontman and sole remaining official member Al Jourgensen negotiated a new contract with Sire Records, securing absolute artistic control and enlisting British producer Adrian Sherwood to refine the project's evolving direction. Recording sessions took place during 1985 at Southern Studios in London and Hansa Tonstudio in West Berlin, alongside collaborator Keith LeBlanc.
Released in March 1986, Twitch marked the band's pivotal transition into EBM, industrial dance, and electro-industrial. Built upon abrasive drum machine patterns, looping sequencers, white noise, distorted vocal effects, and extensive audio sampling, the album broke away from conventional pop formulas while retaining subtle synth-pop melodies on tracks like "Over the Shoulder" and "The Angel", enhanced by Sherwood's distinctive dub production techniques. The opening track "Just Like You" introduced Ministry's initial foray into politically charged lyrics.
Although the album peaked at No. 194 on the Billboard 200 and divided critics upon release, the supporting North American tour established a vital line-up featuring bassist Paul Barker and drummer Bill Rieflin. Over time, Twitch became recognized as a landmark blueprint for the emergence of late 1980s industrial rock and electronic body music.
