The debut self-titled album by Melbourne-based artist YL Hooi, originally intended as a limited cassette release on Altered States Tapes, was recorded intermittently over a two-year period between 2017 and 2019. Co-produced with Tarquin Manek (Tarquin Manek) (Kallista Kult, LST, M. Quake), the recording blends DIY minimalism, dub structures, impressionistic melodic motifs, and ambient soundscapes. The album's sonic environment revolves around YL Hooi's ghostly vocal presence anchored within evolving rhythmic structures, moving from the opening track "Title" and "Straight Thru" into the inverted bossa nova of "W/O Love." A centerpiece of the LP is a reinterpretation of the classic lovers rock song "Stranger" by Love Joys, reimagined into a dense, intimate experimental piece. The 2021 reissue on Efficient Space features remastered audio and updated artwork referencing the artist's Chinese and Russian heritage.
