Arizona-based musician Julio Lopez presents the album Cloud Unknowing, reissued for a wider audience via Brooklyn label Lobby Art editions. The project serves as a meditative exploration of diaspora heritage, weaving together influences from Irish folk, cumbia rebajada, bolero, sun-bleached 1970s pop, and classic tropicalia.
The musical environment exists at the intersection of ambient folk and low-key pop. Structurally, the tracks rely on radio interference, sampled percussion, delicate twanging guitars, and pitch-bent synthesizer tones. Lopez delivers somnolent, improvised vocals that range from quiet whispers to stretched tonal shifts over a continuous drone, adopting a structural logic reminiscent of Indian raaga. Opening with an adaptation of the Irish folk piece an raibh tú ag an gcarraig? and featuring extended 11-minute compositions, the record transforms traditional celebratory styles into hazed, dreamlike sonic textures.
Tracklist:
1. Julio López - an raibh tú ag an gcarraig
2. Julio López - en una noche oscura
3. Julio López - crayon angels
4. Julio López - eclipse
5. Julio López - si la tierra suspire
6. Julio López - i will do my last singing in this land
