A real dubstep OG fires eight archival bullets on the foundational Tempa label, hailing to the sound’s crucial early phase when it expanded in the cracks between UKG, D&B and grime to vent disciplined updates of classic dub pressures.
Instrumental to dubstep’s development since 2005, West London’s Dwayne Marsh aka D1 has always been a less is more kinda guy, with his productions clearly time-stamped to early dubstep, but future-proofed by their steely, agile construction to deadly effect.
His ‘Tempa Archive, Vol 2: Enigma’ throws back deep into golden years circa 2002-2006 with eight dubs that only now see the light of day, ranging from what could easily be mistaken as a early Mala cut in ‘Enigma’, thru the stare down grime of ‘E.T.’, and aspects of his classic ‘Crack Bong’ recycled with a subcontinental feel on ‘Life Force’.
The looming background inspiration of his ‘90s jungle/D&B-producing father, Michael Anthony Marsh, can be felt squashed into the neuro halfstep snarl of ‘Earth’, and a certain West London broken beat finesse is tucked into the nervy funk of ’Snatch’, while he works shades away from Muslimgauze in ‘Tabala’, and goes rude on an oingy boingy tip with ‘Verb’.
