Record label Strut has released a comprehensive archival compilation titled Nigeria 80, compiled by Duncan Brooker (Duncan Brooker) as a continuation of the influential Nigeria 70 series. The project examines the Nigerian music scene of the 1980s — a period when, despite political instability and economic hardship, independent record labels such as Tabansi and Phonodisk enabled a thriving local industry. This decade was defined by the rising visibility of female artists led by Onyeka Onwenu (Onyeka Onwenu), alongside adventurous genre hybridity. The release features previously unreleased reissues from pivotal figures: highlife masters Victor Uwaifo (Victor Uwaifo), Nico Mbarga (Nico Mbarga), and Paulson Kalu (Paulson Kalu), juju pioneer Segun Adewale (Segun Adewale), Africa 70 bandleader Lekan Animashaun (Lekan Animashaun) with a track produced by Fela Kuti (Fela Kuti), and Prince David Bull (Prince David Bull). Additionally, the compilation highlights early Nigerian proto-hip hop by I.C. Rock, self-produced reggae by Evi-Edna Ogholi (Evi-Edna Ogholi), and hypnotic traditional percussion by Ibealaoke Chukwukeziri (Ibealaoke Chukwukeziri) with his Anaedeonu band.
